Overview of Lotus Diagram:
A lotus diagram is an analytical, organizational tool for breaking broad topics into components, which can then be further organized, analyzed or prioritized.

It is a picture of the separate components of a topic. It provides a common understanding of the components of the topic.

How? Steps for Creating a Lotus Diagram

  1. Draw chart/diagram
  2. Write topic in center of chart
  3. Brainstorm and record 8 sub topics
  4. May continue by placing the sub topics in the center of a new diagram

Examples of how to use a Lotus Diagram:

  • put the word (Adjectives, Nouns, Verbs, etc.) in the middle and have the students list words in the outside boxes
  • put a character’s name in the middle and have the students list traits in the outside boxes
  • brainstorm writing ideas
  • problem in the middle and possible solutions in the outside boxes
  • put a word in the middle and have the students lit synonyms or antonyms in the outside boxes
  • main idea in the middle and supporting details in the outside boxes
  • inference in the middle and evidence in the outside boxes
